THE TURKISH FRIENDS
The Turkish Friends of Çatalhöyük have had a successful year fundraising. They raised a total of $13,700 through their campaign named Give Çatalhöyük a Hand. The campaign was initiated at a tea party at the British Consulate in Istanbul. Our thanks are due to Ambassador Sir and Lady Prendergast who hosted the party. Friends also visited Çatalhöyük during the 1996 season on a tour led by Resit Ergener and on another occasion enjoyed meeting James Mellaart.

The Turkish Friends spent $11,800 of the funds they raised on a shelter for the site and on transporting the shelter to the site by road. It will be erected at the beginning of the 1997 season. Organising the events described above involved a great deal of effort by the Turkish Friends. We are very grateful for all their hard work. The Turkish Friends have great plans for 1997. Their target is $40,000 for the construction of the onsite museum. They also plan to fund another shelter and to support the Turkish students at the site, and we wish them every success. The Turkish Friends would welcome any help that can be offered, and can be contacted in Istanbul on (212) 269 4393 and (212) 263 6598.
