NEW TEAMS, NEW PROJECTS
Year by year the project develops with new initiatives and teams. In 2005 we will be joined in the field by two Turkish teams. One is the team that has joined us from Istanbul University led by Dr. Mihriban Özbaşaran who visited the site this season and chose an area to excavate in 2005. The aim of Team IST, as opposed to the Poznań team, is to excavate the earliest levels of the site so that comparisons can be drawn with their excavations at Aşıklı Höyük and Musular. These two Aceramic Neolithic sites where members from Team IST have worked for many years, located in the east part of Central Anatolia - west Cappadocia, are the predecessors of Çatalhöyük in chronological terms. Aşıklı is radiocarbon dated to the 9th-8th mill. and the Musular to the 8th-7th mill. BC. With such a background, Team IST aims to focus on the early/earliest development of the site. The most promising and suitable area to fullfill these objectives is the southwestern slope of the mound located just to the south of the South Area. The second Turkish team is from Selcuk University, Konya. It has long been known that a classical site lies to the southeast of the East mound beyond the site perimeter fence. The team proposes to investigate this site over a five-year period. In the first year the area will be assessed through geophysical survey followed by a series of strategically located 1x1m soundings to ascertain the extent and potential of this classical period site. |
